7:37PM - Help!!! Which house do we buy?

Hey everyone,

Long time, no talk.  So the hubby and I have hit a dilemma (of the better variety, if there is one).

We don't know which house to buy!

Two townhouses, both almost identical cost per month.  One is in Huntington Hills and one is in Glenbrook.  We like te Huntington Hills area and are planning on having a child within the next year but Glenbrook is obviously closer to downtown and as a result, several c train stops which is great if the car ever breaks down and we can't afford repairs.  Both are near several amenities.

Anyone have experience living in either of these areas?  What did you like and dislike about them?  We someow got the impression that Glenbrook migt be a "rougher" area so to speak but unsure.

12:53PM - Moving Filming

Curious if anyone randomly knows what was being filmed in Queensland in the SE? They were set up for almost 2 weeks in front of a school and then gone one day. Anyone have any knowledge on how to figure that out?

6:00AM - Ring for Sale

I've got a ring I'm trying to sell. I inherited it from my great grandmother, but I'm not one to wear such a ring, and I've no one to pass it onto, myself. Plus, I don't deny I could use whatever money I could get for the ring. It was apparently made in India sometime between 1920 and 1950. It's 14K gold, with seventeen sapphires and eight opals. It was appraised at $2,200 Canadian as of March 6th, 2014. Ideally I'd like to get $1,500 for it, but I've no idea if that's reasonable, or even how to go about selling said ring.

Assuming this works, I've included pictures below the cut, for anyone interested in seeing the ring itself.

Does anyone have any idea how I might go about selling this ring for a reasonable amount, or does anyone perhaps want the ring?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

3:36PM - Bird rescue loses home and birds to fire

Hi peeps, one of the few local bird rescues in town, Birdline, had a fire that affected the home of the group's executive director as well as killing about two dozen birds :-(

Here's a video about the rescue from January:

Hello out there?

We have been here awhile now- what is everyone up to these days?

Thinking of expanding my social horizons beyond work- anyone here interested or is everyone a meetup.com junkie nowadays?

In other news, recently discovered I apparently hold beliefs typical of a Unitarian Universalist or whichever order it goes in. Interesting.

9:42PM

Hey everyone,

Wanted to check in to see how everyone is doing.

The place we reserved is on an upper floor in one of the few areas unaffected.

That being said, is it dumb of us to try to do this move? We are aiming for September.

Do you guys think this will affect my ability to find employment? I keep seeing postings go up and I respond to all of them and get myself out there (I also have amazing references from some higher-ups, as it were). I wonder if Calgary will lose money and not be able to pay well (typically my field in Alberta should pay in the 20s range per hour- perhaps more as I will have my Master's). No one is responding, and I don't know if it's because of the flood or not as the postings are going up nonetheless.

Should we just take back the deposit and bank on Edmonton? Was not a fan of it the first time around.

Thoughts?

9:21PM - Where to live...

Hey people,

Am I the only one posting here? :S

So, looking at different neighbourhoods for an apartment for about 6mos to one year (hoping to buy something by then) and wanted to know about these places so far:

-Heritage and Bonaventure (SE)/Frobisher Blvd
-Cameron & 10th Ave (SW)
-Farmount and 99 (SE)

Which areas and rental companies to avoid?

Ok, so I know this is going to really strange, but I have gotten no answers thus far and really, where else do you turn when not even Google has the answer?

As I mentioned in my last post here, I have lived across the country and when I was living in Edmonton, I noticed that both my husband and I, who are really small, rapidly put on weight. As in, neither one of our eating, sleeping, exercise habits changed and we could not stop gaining weight. I realize it is a winter city, but we were both at the gym everyday and had to do quite a bit of walking on top of that year round. Also, I bike right up until the first snowfall on top of all this.

Despite moving to yet another winter city, the day we showed up here, we each lost five pounds. And by the end of the first week, the rest of the extra weight we had gained. It hasn't come back.

So I am wondering- does it have something to do with the water. The minerals in it maybe? Because I have heard that when people move to Edmonton, they suddenly gain weight, but no one has really expanded on what their individual habits are, so it's hard to tell what it is about the place.

More importantly, does this happen in Calgary? Anyone from someplace else who just kept gaining weight once they moved there? Maybe it's worth investing in a Brita system?

11:12PM - New here

Hey folks,

My common-law husband and I are looking to settle in the prairies after a cross-Canada living/working/more-university-degree- earning adventure. We are looking at Calgary as a lot of houses are still well-priced, there are a lot of well-paying jobs in both of our fields, and there is good opportunity for winter sports! We have lived in Alberta but not in Calgary and while some of our friends are living there, they are either now very busy with new babies or there for graduate degrees and not sure if they are staying.

So, how easy is it to make friends? I mean, good, down-to-earth people. I have worked in a few places, where unfortunately everyone has had babies too young and so cannot really hang out outside of work, or they are just...well, cold.

Also, are Calgary condos good investments? Or is a house really better? (Let's say the 200,000 range and reasonably close to amenities and parks- also the ability to not have to do yardwork is tempting for a condo).

I keep hearing stories that racism has gotten bad there.

What do you all think?

2:37PM - Best Steak?

Hey there fellow Calgarians!

I am coming to visit your city for the first time next week and would like to know where I can get a really nice steak. Maybe this is a moot question because there are many, but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Anything else worth mentioning, I'll read. Unfortunately, I won't be there for long so sights or restaurants outside of the downtown core won't do. :(

Thanks in advance for your help!

8:36AM - Happenings in Sunalta last night?

Wondering if anyone knows what the heck was going on in Sunalta around 11:30pm last night? There were several parked police cruisers with their lights going all over the neighborhood; there were at least three at Sacred Heart school, one up by the new C-Train station, and one parked at Heritage Music. I also spotted a K9 unit on foot on 16th Street & 13th Ave.

I can't find any mention of anything going on from any of the local news outlets, so I figured I'd ask here and see if anyone knew what was going on.

11:32AM - Used DVDs?

Hello Calgary!

Wow, is there an echo in here? LJ sure is empty these days.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a shop in the downtown/Mission/Beltline/Sunnyside area that has a decent selection of used DVDs.

Archaic, I know, but all the same--any help?

I'm planning on going camping this weekend, leaving Sunday. Any recommendations for a place about 2 hours or less from Calgary? What are the chances of me actually getting a spot anywhere?

10:22AM - Best milkshake in the city?

My daughter has her dance recital tomorrow and she was promised a milkshake after. What is the best place to go? Preferably somewhere in the south? I don't want a fast food milkshake, I want to find those fancy ones, kinda like this:
